David Jessup  > History > THE ALEXANDERSON ALTERNATOR AT HAIKU
MOTOR-GENERATOR ON STEROIDS THAT SENT SIGNALS TO UNDERWATER SUBMARINES THROUGHOUT THE PACIFIC OCEAN. The signals were heard simultaneously in Long Island New York and in Bombay India.

David Jessup > These pumps and pipes control the water cooling system required by both the Alternator and the Diesel stand-by generator.
David Jessup > Ted Urquhart counted 56 valves in this pump room.The water is circulated through an external water cooling tower and back to the alternator and the generator.
David Jessup > The watchstander's station just South of the main room.  The telephone switch board on the right controlled every phone on the base including the comander's office and dependants quarters.Watchstanders were a very well informed group.
David Jessup > A 50,000 watt TCG vacuum tube transmitter.In 1946 this secondary transmitter was frequently tested but seldom utilized.
David Jessup > A new watchstander once used the test key to send out the signal: SOS SOS HAIKU The distress signal was heard over most of the United States and the South Pacific. Lieutenant Harpster returned to Haiku from Headquarters ready to shed blood.

David Jessup > Antenna leaving the building.  Lower right are two leads going to the vast ground system. Farther  below and on the left side of the antenna hole are two smaller insulators and the wires that connect to the TCG vacuum tube transmitter antenna.
David Jessup > Looking East toward Kaneohe. In view are leads to the alternator ground system.The nearest pole holds the antenna leads to the TCG antenna.
