David Jessup > The journey from the West exit of the upper hoist house to the CCL house began with these concrete steps. This 1997 photo shows there has been no maintenance on the steps for some time.
David Jessup > After reaching the top of the cement steps we walked along a wooden board walk on a mountain top not much wider than the walkway. The two cables support the small hoist (or "Joe McGee") that ran between the upper hoist house and the CCL house at the peak.
David Jessup > After taking the previous photo it is just a short walk along the edge of a cliff to where this photo was exposed. If you have a hangover just thinking about trudging up this hill can cause severe internal disturbances. The worst is yet to come.
David Jessup > The first trip to the peak is the happiest, because the first hill shown in the previous picture hides this interesting climb. Forever after you know this little incline is waiting for you. Note that some of the stair steps are in better condition than others. It is an ugly feeling to have a rotten step suddenly break underfoot. Each new shiny step represents a spot were some sailor previously experienced a bad day.
David Jessup > Raffaelli standing on a recently rebuilt section of the ladder shown in previous photo. - This portion is a LADDER with RUNGS - Not steps! The cables on each side of the stairway carried electrical power to the CCL building. If memory serves, the conduit at lower right replaced the older cable on the left.
David Jessup > Below where Raffaelli stood in the last photo are steps. Some have recently been replaced. Note how the cliff falls away from the ladder on both sides.
David Jessup > View from the CCL house at the peak showing the upper hoist house, the first of two hill climbs and the cable supporting the Joe McGee.
David Jessup > Due to the curve in the cliffs the ground lies a couple of thousand feet below this hoist. The "Joe McGee" measured three feet square and about a foot deep. Disney never had a thrill ride like this. The machinery that operated this bucket can still be seen today in the upper hoist house.
David Jessup > the "Joe McGee" or "Bucket" as it approached the CCL house landing. I rode in this rig once - JUST ONCE! Updated Photo courtesy of John Novacich.
