David Jessup > THE SOUTH HOIST.When I first saw this chicken-wire covered cage I agreed to ride in it only after I understood the alternative meant climbing almost 4,000 rungs of a wooden ladder spiked to the south cliff.
David Jessup > David Jessup Summer 1946.I am beginning to enjoy riding this flimsy cage. Sudden wind gusts along the Haiku cliff caused it to sway in a very unsteady manner. When wind blew the return cable over the top of the main cable the engineer at the lower hoist house would stop the cage and jerk it back and forth until the return drive cable was free. I enjoyed the fantastic view on clear days.

David Jessup > Only a few misty clouds keep my Brownie Box camera from obtaining a sharp focus on the South East edge of Haiku Valley. This photo taken from the hoist about halfway up.
David Jessup > Just to the right of the previous photo stands the wooden ladder spiked to the cliff in 1943 by two brave high scalers: Bill Adams & Louis Otto. It leads first to the upper hoist house and then on up to the CCL house at the very peak.
David Jessup > Approaching the upper hoist house. The cage traveled too close to the cliff to be comfortable. The return portion of the drive cable is visible upper right corner.
David Jessup > Looking East at the upper hoist house. Notice that the engineer controlling the hoist from the lower hoist house frequently left enough space between the swaying car and the house to make the jump across exciting. The railing of the wood ladder can be seen to the left of the hoist.
